Matemwe Retreat
Matemwe Retreat is located opposite the Mnemba Atoll in north-east Zanzibar. The Retreat consists of 3 separate villas, full of atmosphere, inspiration and personal touches. The ground floors (150 m2 including verandahs) feature a private cocktail bar, an air-conditioned bedroom, a bathroom and romantic bathtub overlooking the Indian Ocean. There is a plunge pool on the private roof terrace and each villa has its own small beach right in front. The Retreat is built by local craftsmen, and where possible from local materials. Matemwe is perfect for relaxation and water activities. Activities include ocean trips with snorkeling equipment, sail or motor out to the reef, diving trips, snorkeling and kayaking. You will be amazed by the sheer range of fish species in these waters. You might find dolphins that come close to your boat or even spot a whale (best chance for whales August - October). Visits are made to neighboring village to explore local Zanzibar culture and village life as well as Matemwe’s community projects. Day-trips are arranged to the historic centre of Stone Town, Jozani Forest or Prison Island as well as Spice Tour to learn about the great variety of spices that the island is famous for.
Mnemba Island Lodge
Mnemba Island Lodge is situated on an exclusive island 4.5 kilometres off the north-eastern tip of Zanzibar in the azure Indian Ocean. Surrounded by an atoll of breathtaking coral reefs, it is one of Africa’s most wonderful dive sites and is also one of the most romantic ocean destinations in the world. Mnemba features 10 beachside bandas with outdoor veranda. Each secluded banda is hidden in the shade of a tropical beach forest, fringed by the pristine beaches. A palm-covered walkway leads to an en suite bathroom with shower and basin. The Zanzibar Archipelago and its ‘Spice Islands’, frequented by Arab traders in the 8th century, are bathed in the heady scents and romance of a bygone era. Traditional dhows (coastal Arab sailing vessels) drift across the horizon. Fresh fruit, fish and shellfish are served daily, and romantic candle-lit dinners atIntimate island paradise. Baskets of fresh fruit, fish, lobsters, crabs and prawns are sailed into Mnemba daily on traditional ngalawa outriggers, and prepared as exotic delicacies. Romantic candle-lit dinners are enjoyed on the beach. Water activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing and swimming, or simply sunning on the beach. The water’s edge will capture your soul.
